Why We Have a Federal Department of Education

Following her historic confirmation as Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos may find herself unemployed. A bill (H.R. 899) has already been proffered to eliminate the Department of Education. The bill, introduced by Representative Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky), and co-sponsored by seven other Republican members of the House, is terse by any standard invoking just one sentence: “The Department of Education shall terminate on December 31, 2018.” …Read more

FREEDOM: Is ‘government efficiency’ an oxymoron?

Policy - OperationsRANCHO SANTA FE, Ca., November 14, 2014 – One would hope that operating in an efficient and effective manner would be among the main objectives of our Government. However, those two concepts appear to be foreign to our feckless leaders. Apparently, the rule of “supply and demand” doesn’t apply when a group of individuals has nearly unilateral authority to regulate the supply of programs and services (certainly within the public sectors and, to a degree, within the private sector), control the demand (legislatively), and dictate price (via taxation). To overcome this anomaly, we need to frame an operations policy for the United States … Read more

Is Obamacare the landmark legislation and political lesson of our time?

Obama ACA - 004RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif., November 11, 2013 — Obamacare is the single most significant piece of legislation passed in the last century. Period.

Some will argue that a few of the eleven Constitutional Amendments that have been ratified during that 100-year period may rival the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act — the law’s real name, or ACA for short — but they would be wrong … Read more

Showdown Shutdown: Kanye vs Kimmel – House vs Senate

Budget Crisis - Capitol BuildingRANCHO SANTA FE, Ca., September 30, 2013 –  With our nation spiraling toward a government shutdown and possible credit default that supposedly will catapult the world into economic chaos, we seem to be more concerned about the “feud” between Kanye West and Jimmy Kimmel than we are about the politically appalling behavior of our elected representatives. Our priorities appear to be misplaced. Then again, perhaps that explains how many of our elected officials became our elected officials. Not enough people are paying attention.

Our elected officials only know how to delay rather than to decide. The current budget “crisis” is an example. It’s a game in which we are all being played as pawns … Read more

The President, Congress and political schizophrenia

2013-09-24 MontageRANCHO SANTA FE, Ca., September 24, 2013 –  Political schizophrenia is an egotistical disorder that makes it hard to tell the difference between what is real and what is not real, and President Obama and Congress are poster children of the syndrome. They collectively demonstrate the classic symptoms of partisan paranoia coupled with delusional and disorganized thinking. We need to stop pretending that they’re normal, so they can recognize their need to seek help.

Congress has grown dysfunctional because of the disorder. Too many members of the House and Senate, on both sides of the aisle, have been reduced to little more than delivery mechanisms for their respective Parties’ bullet points. Keep in mind: These bullet points are scripted by unelected individuals who are only focused on maintaining or expanding their particular Party’s power. For the most part, they couldn’t care less about “forming a more perfect Union” … Read more
